£150k funding award for Golspie young carers charity will make ‘huge difference’

A charity who provide support for young carers and young adults carers across Sutherland will continue to run for another three years, thanks for a funding award from the Bank of Scotland Foundation.

TYKES Young Carers in Golspie confirmed that it will receive £150,000 over three years as part of the Foundation’s Empower grant programme.

Denise Campbell, project manager, said: “The grant will help us to keep the organisation running over the next three years by contributing towards staffing and running costs.

“It will make a huge difference to us and our ability to support young carers across Sutherland.”

Donald MacKechnie, chair of the Bank of Scotland Foundation said: “Our Empower programme is a testament to our commitment towards making a profound and lasting impact on Scottish communities.

“We know from talking to charities that unrestricted funding gives them much greater scope to cover essential costs and deal with challenges quickly and effectively.

“We are excited to see the positive changes this grant will bring TYKES Young Carers over the next three years.”

TYKES Young Carers provides support for young carers and young adult carers, aged 5-25, across Sutherland, assisting young carers who are faced with extra duties around providing care and support for a family member who, due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction, cannot cope without their support.

They make a positive difference in the lives and wellbeing of young carers and their families by offering advice along with emotional and practical support.

TYKES advocates for young carers and raises awareness of their issues by engaging with the community, statutory agencies and other organisations.

The group is currently fundraising for a new car, to replace their aging car, to enable them to transport kids from around Sutherland to drop-in sessions, respite activities and support meetings.
