Whales refloated at Kyle of Durness

Police would like to thank the personnel from all the agencies involved in this incident, as well as members of the public who volunteered, for their efforts in assisting to re-float the stranded whales.

By this morning, all had been re-floated, but personnel from agencies involved in this incident remained at the location this morning as it is feared there is a possibility some of the whales may again become stranded at low water.

A further single whale had been re-floated just south of the area towards Rhiconich.

Approaching midnight, the emergency services were still on scene attempting to re-float a mother and calf, along with one other whale.

The initial pod of 35 whales were attended to and 25 of these were successfully rescued and re-floated out to sea. Unfortunately 10 whales died as a result of being stranded.

A pod of Pilot Whales had gone ashore in the Kyle yesterday lunchtime, and Police, Coastguard, British Divers Marine Life Rescue , SSPCA and a number of volunteers attended to assist, when it was established that approximately 40 Pilot Whales had become stranded in three separate areas.

Police say that all remaining pilot whales, which were stranded in the area of the Kyle of Durness yesterday, were re-floated this morning.
